Trama
Il Dr. Martin Ellingham, chirurgo a Londra, si trasferisce nel pittoresco borgo marinaro di Porto Wenn di dove è originario, affermandosi come medico condotto. Conosce presto molti degli eccentrici compaesani. È burbero, brusco e intollerante, non solo nelle questioni relative alla medicina, ma anche nella vita di tutti i giorni. Lui e la direttrice della scuola locale, Louisa Glasson, sono ancora chiaramente attratti l'uno dall'altro nonostante la loro goffaggine. Tutto questo è complicato dalle dalla comparsa di una vecchia "amica" di Martin, tutto questo in una cornice di spassosi e strambi avvenimenti e incomprensioni.
