Pioniere jazz-rock tra la fine degli anni '60 e gli anni '70, Larry Coryell fu anche un forte interprete in ambienti lineari, come dimostrano le sue registrazioni per i Muse nella seconda metà degli anni '80. Major Jazz Minor Blues raccoglie dieci brani da quei dischi, la maggior parte in un contesto di trio, e lo vede reagire bene con musicisti come i bassisti Stanley Cowell e George Mraz e i pianisti Kenny Barron e Billy Hart. Il disco cattura due dei suoi migliori brani originali dell'epoca, "Tender Tears" e "No More Booze, Minor Blues", oltre alle versioni sorprendentemente sfumate di Coryell di "'Round Midnight", "My Shining Hour" e "Sophisticated Lady."
