A Morfa Halen, nel Galles occidentale, Jackie Ellis, un'ex detective della polizia ora maestra delle elementari, si trova di fronte a un caso agghiacciante. Il corpo di Cefin, un suo studente di nove anni, viene ritrovato annegato in una palude salmastra, riaprendo le ferite del caso irrisolto della scomparsa della nipote di Jackie, che le ha rovinato la carriera. Il caso viene affidato al detective Eric Bull, ex partner di Jackie che l'ha costretta a cambiare lavoro. Convinta che i due casi siano collegati, Jackie si ritrova a dover collaborare con Bull per far luce sulla verità.
