Un aereo di trasporto detenuti precipita nei pressi di una cittadina remota e silenziosa. Decine di criminali fuggono, sparpagliandosi nella vastità bianca. Non è solo un incidente. Non è solo una fuga. È l’inizio di una caccia all’uomo in cui ogni regola salta.
Nella serie The Last Frontier, Frank Remnick, US Marshal con un piede già fuori dal servizio, si trova improvvisamente al centro di una catastrofe umana. È lui il muro fragile tra la popolazione e la furia scatenata dei detenuti in fuga. Non c’è spazio per eroismi a effetto: Frank è un uomo che ha visto troppo, che vorrebbe lasciarsi tutto alle spalle, ma che conosce fin troppo bene il peso del dovere. Quando la sua stessa moglie viene rapita e il sospetto che lo schianto dell’aereo non sia stato casuale si fa strada, l’uomo di legge diventa qualcosa di diverso. Forse peggiore. Forse necessario.
Accanto a lui (e a volte contro) c’è l’agente della CIA Sidney Scofield. Il suo interesse per un fuggitivo in particolare, Havlock, accende una seconda miccia nella polveriera. Sidney non cerca giustizia: cerca risposte. È lucida, letale e ha un’agenda che non ammette distrazioni. Il confronto con Frank non è solo operativo, è ideologico. Due metodi, due mondi, due motivazioni. E nel mezzo, l’ombra lunga del sospetto: se l’intera missione è una copertura, chi è davvero il nemico?
