Pubblicato nel dicembre del '79, London Calling raggiunse il numero 9 nella classifica britannica; negli Stati Uniti, dove fu pubblicato nel gennaio 1980, raggiunse il numero 27. All'inizio di marzo 1980, i Clash portarono il loro tour London Calling negli Stati Uniti e il 6 marzo si esibirono al Capitol Theatre di Passaic, nel New Jersey, un famigerato locale musicale che aveva aperto originariamente nel 1921 e che, durante gli anni '70 e '80, era diventato una tappa fissa nei tour di molte band rock.
