Con il suo stile lirico e swingante, il sassofonista contralto Art Pepper è riconosciuto come una delle principali stelle del jazz emerse dalla scena jazz della West Coast degli anni '50. Solista di talento fin dall'adolescenza, Pepper attirò inizialmente l'attenzione con i suoi tour come membro della band di Stan Kenton, prima di lanciare la sua carriera da solista. Raggiunse la fama quasi istantanea, classificandosi secondo dietro Charlie Parker come miglior sassofonista contralto (suonò occasionalmente anche il clarinetto e il sax tenore) nel sondaggio dei lettori della rivista DownBeat del 1952. Insieme ad artisti come Chet Baker, Gerry Mulligan, Shelly Manne e altri, Pepper divenne sinonimo del rilassato sound jazz della West Coast.
