.:TRAMA:.
Italian Folktales (Fiabe italiane) is a collection of 200 Italian folktales published in 1956 by Italo Calvino. Calvino began the project in 1954, influenced by Vladimir Propp's Morphology of the Folktale; his intention was to emulate the Straparola in producing a popular collection of Italian fairy tales for the general reader. He did not compile tales from listeners, but made extensive use of the existing work of folklorists; he noted the source of each individual tale, but warned that was merely the version he used.
He included extensive notes on his alterations to make the tales more readable and the logic of his selections, such as renaming the heroine of The Little Girl Sold with the Pears Perina rather than Margheritina to connect to the pears, and selecting Bella Venezia as the Italian variant of Snow White because it featured robbers, rather than the variants containing dwarfs, which he suspected were imported from Germany.
It was first translated into English in 1962; a further translation is by Sylvia Mulcahy (Dent, 1975) and constituted the first comprehensive collection of Italian folktales.

.:BIOGRAFIA:.
Italo Calvino (Santiago de Las Vegas de La Habana, 15 ottobre 1923 – Siena 19 September 1985) was an Italian writer and lyricist.
An intellectual of great political, civil and cultural commitment, he was one of the most important Italian storytellers of the second half of the twentieth century.
He has followed many of the main literary tendencies he has coeve, from neorealism to postmodernism, through humorous fantasy and humorous science fiction, but always keeping a distance from them and carrying out a path of personal and consistent research. Hence the contradictory impression that his work and his personality can offer: on the one hand a great variety of attitudes that reflects the succession of poetics and cultural addresses in the forty years between 1945 and 1985; on the other hand, a substantial unity determined by an attitude inspired by an attitude inspired by a more methodological rationalism than ideological, by the taste of irony, by the interest in the sciences and for the attempts at explanation of the world, as well as a stylistic plan.
The numerous fields of interest touched by his literary path are meditated and told through masterpieces such as the trilogy of Our Ancestors, Marcovaldo, Le cosmicomics, If a winter's night a traveler, united by the common thread of reflection on history and contemporary society. From the beginning of his career until his death, Calvin wrote about two hundred short stories. In addition, as a member of the Cantacronaches, he was also the author of song lyrics: some of them, how Where does the vulture fly? and beyond the bridge were later reinterpreted by many artists.
