Il vulcanologo Trevor Anderson (Brendan Fraser) conduce delle ricerche sulle placche tettoniche, purtroppo con esiti fallimentari. Il laboratorio al college di Boston, dove tiene le sue lezioni, rischia infatti di chiudere in assenza di scoperte interessanti.Ad interrompere bruscamente le frustranti giornate dello scienziato è suo nipote Sean (Josh Hutcherson), che suona a sorpresa al citofono di casa Anderson, per trascorrere alcuni giorni in compagnia dello zio. I due, impacciati, cercano di combattere la noia rovistando in una vecchia scatola appartenuta a Max, fratello di Trevor e padre di Sean, anch'egli ricercatore scientifico. Trovano così una copia del romanzo di Verne, che Max, prima di partire per una spedizione in Islanda che gli era stata fatale, aveva riempito di appunti.Seguendo gli indizi del libro, che descrive minuziosamente il mondo sotterraneo, i due decidono di raggiungere l’isola e portare avanti la ricerca. Inizia così un'avventura straordinaria, in cui ad accompagnare i protagonisti è Hannah (Anita Briem), un’affascinante guida di montagna che li aiuta ad estrarre l’ultimo sensore sismico piazzato da Max sulla cima di un vulcano. Per una serie di peripezie e sfortunati eventi, i tre si ritrovano catapultati negli inferi della Terra, tra paesaggi mai visti e creature irreali. Hannah, scettica nei confronti delle teorie "verniane" di cui anche suo padre era un convinto sostenitore, deve ammettere che, nel cuore del pianeta, tutto è come l’autore aveva narrato duecento anni prima. Ma lo stupore lascia il posto alla paura quando i tre si accorgono che non c'è una via di uscita.
