Un sottomarino tedesco, in agguato nell'Atlantico, il 3 giugno 1916 affonda una nave carica di civili ma anche di armi per gli Alleati. Il comandante Von Schonvorf, non essendosi accorto che sono rimasti superstiti alcuni uomini dell'equipaggio, con il cap. Bradley, e due civili - l'americano Bowen Tiler e la biologa Lisa Clayton -, emerge in mezzo alla nebbia e si trova costretto ad arrendersi al resto delle sue vittime. A corto di carburante, il natante raggiunge una terra sconosciuta dell'Antartide e , passando per un canale sottoerraneo, penetra nel cuore di un paese popolato da feroci indigeni e da una fauna antidiluviana. I tedeschi, gli Inglesi e i civili neutrali, si trovano costretti a collaborare per sopravvivere. Nel corso delle diverse avventure, tra oro si stabilisce una discreta armonia, ad eccezione del secondo di Von Schonvort. Tuttavia, a causa del terremoto scoppiato nella sconosciuta terra il sommergibile viene distrutto con tutti gli uomini che sono a bordo. Solo Lisa e Bowen rimangono sull'isola, alla ricerca di uno spazio per vivere; e affidano a una bottiglia il racconto dell'incredibile storia.
