Un negro, Ralp Burton, prigioniero da cinque giorni in una miniera di carbone, viene preso dal panico quando nota che nessun tentativo viene piu' fatto per cercare di salvarlo. Egli fa appello alle proprie energie e con una serie di sforzi riesce a rivedere la luce, ma trova la città deserta. Tutto tace, i negozi sono vuoti, le case abbandonate, le strade silenziose. Dalle notizie e dagli articoli di un giornale che gli è capitato fra le mani, gli sembra di poter dedurre che una bomba atomica ha distrutto tutta l'America e forse tutto il mondo e che vani sono stati i tentativi intrapresi per salvare il paese ed il genere umano. Percorre le strade di New York nella speranza di trovare qualche superstite; ed infatti incontra una donna, Sarah Crandall, salvatasi grazie ad una camera di decompressione. Ralph prova per Sarah un sentimento di viva simpatia: ai due giovani s'unisce poi un terzo superstite, Ben Thacker, che è gravemente ammalato. Ralph, con l'aiuto di un libro, lo cura e lo salva. Essendo entrambi innamorati di Sarah, i due si sfidano a duello: al convegno stabilito Ralph si presenta senza armi. Ben non ha il coraggio di sparare: il compito di dare origine ad una nuova umanità resta quindi affidato a Ralph ed a Sarah.
