Mambo è cresciuto a pesci e tip tap, ha sposato Gloria e adesso è padre apprensivo di Erik, un cucciolo che sogna due ali per volare e una voce per cantare. Goffo e maldestro, Erik è diverso dagli altri pinguini, non canta, non balla e non sembra trovare il suo posto nel mondo. Fuggito da casa incontra Sven, un pinguino molto speciale, col becco grosso e due ali adatte al volo. Predicatore cialtrone di mistica e di fumo, Sven colpisce la fantasia di Erik e ne diventa figura di riferimento. Raggiunto da Mambo, Erik si lascia convincere a malincuore a tornare indietro. Il mondo intorno a loro intanto si sta trasformando, l'innalzamento delle temperature e lo scioglimento dei ghiacciai hanno compromesso la sicurezza dei pinguini imperiali. Sulla strada verso casa, Erik troverà la sua canzone e Mambo imparerà il mestiere del genitore, salvando creativamente Gloria e tutti i suoi compagni. Lo aiuteranno nell'impresa i colossali elefanti marini e i minuscoli krill.
