Scritto e diretto da Mike Cahill, I Origins è sia un thriller basato sulla biologia molecolare sia un'intensa storia d'amore. Protagonsta della storia è il giovane dottor Ian Gray, un biologo molecolare che, mentre è impegnato nello studio dell'evoluzione dell'occhio, vive una breve ma intensa relazione destinata a cambiargli la vita con Sofi, una ragazza destinata ad abbandonarlo fin troppo presto. Tempo dopo quel rapporto, Ian e la collega di laboratorio Karen faranno un'interessante scoperta scientifica le cui implicazioni riguarderanno non solo le credenze scientifiche ma anche quelle spirituali, portando Ian a viaggiare per mezzo mondo e a rischiare ogni cosa per convalidare la sua teoria.
Partendo dal presupposto che gli occhi sono sempre stati considerati lo specchio dell'anima e dalle scoperte fatte nel 1987 da John Daugman, docente della Cambridge University che ha stabilito come ogni individuo abbia un'iride dai tratti peculiari e distinti al pari di un'impronta digitale, Cahill - come con l'opera di esordio Another Earth - fornisce un'esplorazione personale e poco convenzionale dei misteri del mondo scientifico. Il regista si pone infatti le stesse domande su cui gli scienziati lavorano quotidianamente (inerenti alla presenza dell'uomo sulla Terra e alla materia di cui siamo composti) e cerca risposte che seguono in maniera molto libera le teorie di Richard Dawkins, famoso biologo evoluzionista e ateo.
