Above Suspicion, film diretto da Phillip Noyce, racconta la storia di Mark Putnam (Jack Huston), un giovane agente dell'FBI. La sua vita è una quadro felice: si è sposato con Kathy (Sophie Lowe), di recente ha avuto un figlio e ha da poco completato anche la sua formazione in accademia. Il ragazzo sembra essere un agente perfetto così viene inviato subito a Pikeville, città di montagna del Kentucky, sita sugli Appalachi. La missione prevede che Mark indaghi su alcune attività illegali e poco dopo il suo arrivo l'uomo trova anche l'informatrice ideale. Si tratta di Susan (Emilia Clarke), una giovane del posto di bassa estrazione sociale, con cui Mark inizia a intrattiene una relazione adultera.
Il motivo per cui Susan aiuta l'agente è molto semplice: vede in lui una via di fuga dalla sua misera vita. Le loro speranze, però, saranno del tutto vanificate, quando uno scandalo li coinvolgerà, scuotendo a piccola comunità montana e le massime autorità della nazione e portando Mark a essere il primo agente dell'FBI a esser condannato per omicidio.
