Jean-Baptiste Meyer, un industriale ottantacinquenne molto rispettato, viene assassinato apparentemente senza motivo. Dell'omicidio è colpevole secondo la polizia Fabrizio Collini, un operaio italiano da poco in pensione. Il giovane e inesperto avvocato Caspar Leinen viene assegnato al caso come difensore d'ufficio ma vorrebbe rifiutare l'incarico dal momento che conosceva il morto per aver avuto una storia adolescenziale con sua nipote Johanna. Avrà modo così di imbattersi in uno degli scandali giudiziari più grandi della storia della Germania.
