«Non sono mai riuscito a punirti per i delitti che hai commesso, ora pagherai per un delitto che non hai commesso». È un po' qui il succo di un film che comincia benissimo, tra un "tuffo" nella Istanbul del 1945 ed un salto in avanti nella brumosa Svizzera del 1975. Che però, poi, si perde, nonostante abbia alle spalle un testo forte, come Il giudice e il suo boia di Friedrich Dürrenmatt. Si perde, in parte perché dietro alla macchina da presa non c'è un regista "forte" (ma l'attore Maximilian Schell), in parte perché, forse, viene dato troppo spazio alla figura della compagna (Jacqueline Bisset) del poliziotto Schmied ed alle complicazioni sentimentali che ne seguono. In questo modo, viene a perdere di pregnanza il tema dürrenmattiano della lotta fra Bene e Male, eternamente governato dai capricci del Caso.
