A Vienna Erika Kohur, maestra di piano, è una nevrotica masochista che vive con una madre possessiva e sfoga la sua sessualità frustrata nel voyeurismo. Corteggiata da un allievo, di lei innamorato, cerca di stabilire con lui un rapporto perversamente imperniato sul dominio nella sottomissione, ma ormai le è negato l'accesso alla vita come al desiderio. 6° film per il cinema di M. Haneke (e 61° di I. Huppert) che ha adattato un romanzo di Elfriede Jelinek, Premio Nobel 2004, che gli è affine per impietosa misantropia e sarcastica analisi, spinta al parossismo, dei meccanismi della società austriaca. Due, e complementari, i limiti del film di un regista che qui usa la cinepresa come uno scalpello: il caso patologico che soltanto in parte diventa metaforico e il suo essere scritto su misura per I. Huppert e i suoi intensi primi piani. Parlato in francese. Nella colonna musicale prevalgono Schubert e Schumann. Gran Premio della giuria di Cannes e Palme d'oro per I. Huppert e B. Magimel.
