"Ho sempre pensato che fossi d'accordo a fare musica, e mi sono divertito a farlo, ma non ho mai pensato di poter davvero farne una carriera", dice Flume ad Apple Music. Non ci volle molto perché Harley Streten si rendesse conto di quanto avesse torto. Il suo album di debutto del 2012 Flume ha portato un nuovo sound alla musica dance: ritmi spliced, squelchy, all'indietro e melodie confuse e fuse. Brani storditi e distesi come "Holdin On" non suonavano come qualcosa che veniva suonato nei club in quel momento, e Streten non si sarebbe mai aspettato che quel suono sarebbe diventato così popolare. Anche per lui, all'epoca, era un progetto collaterale. "La roba Flume è stata solo un po' divertente, uno sfogo creativo per me per fare cose che non erano per il club", dice. "Ironia della sorte, ho finito per giocare molto nei club dopo, quando ha iniziato a decollare".
