Come cantante, cantautore e produttore, Otis Redding è riuscito a cambiare per sempre la musica soul in soli cinque anni. Debuttando sulla leggendaria Stax Records nel 1962, Redding combinava la cruda intensità del blues, la gravità del gospel e la dolcezza del pop. Le sue prime uscite hanno definito il suono duro del soul del sud, ma era anche un magistrale ballerino. Un dinamico esecutore dal vivo, le sue apparizioni ai festival rock degli anni '60 hanno contribuito ad ampliare il pubblico del soul. Morì nel 1967 alla tragicamente giovane età di 26 anni, ma le sue canzoni non hanno perso nulla del loro potere funky e pieno di sentimento decenni dopo.
