Il compositore greco Vangelis Papathanassíou ha iniziato come tastierista rock progressivo con la band Aphrodite's Child e si è quasi unito agli Yes nel 1974. (In seguito ha realizzato album in duo con il cantante degli Yes Jon Anderson nei panni di Jon & Vangelis.) Ma erano le sue colonne sonore, in particolare quella vincitrice dell'Oscar nel 1981 Chariots of Fire e Blade Runner del 1982, che gli è valso un pubblico più ampio. Entrambi hanno dimostrato l'ampio stile orchestrale che è diventato il suo marchio di fabbrica, ma hanno anche aperto nuovi mondi per la sintesi elettronica all'interno delle colonne sonore dei film. Nei decenni a seguire, l'influenza di Vangelis si sarebbe fatta sentire in tutto il panorama della musica elettronica. Il suo lavoro ambient ha informato la direzione progressivamente introspettiva della techno e della dubstep, e ha fornito un modello per i produttori sperimentali moderni come Oneohtrix Point Never e artisti trance come Armin van Buuren per ricontestualizzare i suoni della New Age a modo loro. Ha continuato a fare musica bella e stimolante anche nei suoi anni settanta, incluso Juno to Jupiter del 2021 , un album ispirato alla sonda spaziale Juno della NASA. Vangelis è morto nel maggio 2022 all'età di 79 anni.
